What are the Common Cracking Performances of Side Dump Semi Trailers?

The most common problem of the side dump semi trailer damage is cracking. It can be said that almost all the side dump semi trailers have the problem of cracking. Then, what is the cause for it?


There are many reasons for the cracking of the side dump semi trailer, including structural design problems and material problems, which can be concluded in five points:


1. The cracking of the welding seam of the flip beam and the web


It is known to all that the torque of the side dump semi trailer is very large, especially the lower wing plate. The twisting force of the lower wing plate acts on the flip beam through the diagonal bracing of the flip beam, and the weld between the web and the flip beam has a large stress, so the welding seam at the flip beam and the web is prone to cracking.


2. Suspension ribs cracking


Generally speaking, the dangerous section of the component appears at the variable section. Small arc angle of the variable section in the suspension rib of the side dump semi trailer leads to the concentrated stress. What’s more, due to the weight reduction hole nearby, the strength of the rib section of the plate is greatly reduced, the fracture occurs at this section. Therefore, when the vehicle passes through complex road traffic, this section will twist and then crack.


3. Suspension diagonal brace and suspension brace cracking


The suspension of the frame is a place where the torsion is relatively large, especially when the frame is rapidly turning, the lateral force received by the tires will act on the frame through the axle, leaf spring, and suspension. Besides, there is no connecting tube at the side dump semi trailer suspension, we can regard the vertical distance from the contact point of the tire to the ground to the frame as the arm of force, which shows that the torque of the frame is large, especially the lower wing plate. It is easy to twist at the place, causing cracking of the inner and outer support plates.


4. Suspension diagonal brace cracking


Some side dump semi trailers have no reinforcement on the upper web of the suspension, and their suspension braces are welded to the connecting pipe. Therefore, the suspension will be twisted a lot when the trailer is running, especially when passing a bumpy and curved road section. Besides, the stress of the diagonal bracing plate will be concentrated at avoiding the wing plate, which causes the suspension diagonal brace to crack.


5. Reinforced diagonal brace cracking on the flip beam of the subframe


There are two main reasons for the cracking of the diagonal bracing reinforcement of the sub-frame turning beam: firstly, as the sub-frame longitudinal beam and the turning beam are cross-butted, the strength is weak. When the vehicle is turned over and unloaded, the turning beam will be deformed; secondly, when the side dump semi trailer is unloaded, the front and rear cylinders are not synchronized, and the sub-frame is twisted, which will lead to the cracking.
